REACH: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals Regulation

REACH is the single largest piece of legislation ever enacted in the EU.  Everyone in the chemical supply chain from initial manufacture to end users will be impacted.

The REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, came into force in June 2007 and affects the chemical industry worldwide. REACH is the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals Regulation (EC 1907/2006).

The process of REACH compliance will continue until 2018 with different milestones along the way - not all parts of REACH apply now. See REACH Timeline

The first REACH deadline (pre-registration) was 30 November 2008: any substance not pre-registered by that deadline must now be registered before it can be marketed (unless you qualify for late pre-registration).

GHS - Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals

In different countries worldwide, there are various laws on chemical hazard classification and communication.  The aim of GHS is to tackle this problem by standardising both classification and communication.

The UN brought together experts from around the world including the International Programme on Chemical Safety and the World Health Organisation, to put together criteria for both classification and communication. In Europe, GHS is implemented through the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. 

The deadline for substance reclassification in the EU was 1 December 2010 and for mixtures is 1 June 2015.
