First Aid for Chemical Exposures Training

What can you do while waiting for the ambulance?

Typical first aid training only demonstrates the procedures to carry out in the event of loss of breathing or circulation, bleeding, broken bones, asthma, stroke, etc. The syllabus may mention poisoning, usually in the context of chemical burns, but generally very little is taught about first aid following other chemical exposures.

NCEC's First Aid for Chemical Exposures course can help you provide vital first aid in the event of an incident involving chemicals.

Aims of the course:

First aid is defined as the emergency care or treatment of a sick or injured person before professional medical care is available. The aims of first aid are to preserve life, prevent further harm and promote recovery. But would you know what to do if someone in your workplace had a chemical accident?

The First Aid for Chemical Exposures course combines first aid and chemical hazard awareness.

Course overview

First Aid for Chemical Exposures training:

  • Recognise and understand chemical hazards.
  • Interpret the information on safety data sheets.
  • Know how chemicals behave when released to be able to determine the most likely routes of exposure.
  • Understand the effects of chemicals following exposure via ingestion, inhalation and skin/eye contact.
  • Provide generic first aid following exposure via the different routes.
  • Identify chemicals that require specialist first aid treatment.
  • Have the confidence to make a safe response.

The course will also include some hands-on exercises to help develop your skills and understanding.

Who should attend

The course is aimed at those who use chemicals, or work in an environment where chemicals are handled and would like a better understanding of the type of first aid that can be performed following a chemical exposure. It is an obvious add-on for those who are already first aid at work (FAW) qualified.
